A pouch is a simple tube of fabric with a curved seam.  While some pouches are adjustable, fitted pouches have no snaps or hardware.

The pouch has the shortest learning curve; most people can learn to use a pouch quickly.

Pouches and ring slings are good for newborns and situations in which babies are being taken out and put back in frequently.  For long wearing of heavy babies, you may be more comfortable with a two shoulder carrier (like a wrap or a mei tai).

Because a fitted pouch is not adjustable, having the right size is very important.  Pouches are most commonly used for the cradle, kangaroo, and hip carries.

A pouch allows you to cradle your newborn.  Because many newborns prefer to be carried/ worn snuggled heart to heart rather than cradled, a wrap or ring sling may be preferable for the first few months.
